It's time for a change / Tempo de mu-dança

After more than three years posting here it's time for a change. Costurando Livros now has a new home: here. As at the moment I have a very busy schedule (working and writting my thesis) the number of post has decreased, but I just started microblogging in Twitter, I hope this will help me keeping posting. You can follow the posts in the page of Twitter itself, through RSS, TwitterFox or in the side bar of the new website. I hope you enjoy all the new things! See you!

Como a agenda anda cheia (com o trabalho e a tese por escrever) eu tenho escrito menos, mas agora eu comecei a postar no Twitter também. Espero que assim eu consiga postar mais. It's seems that the French publishing Larousse house will try to compete with Wikipedia. They made their encyclopedic content access for free and also open the possibility for the user to contribute. But unlike the Wikipedia, only identified users are allowed to contribute. Great news for the French speakers and I hope the company decides to do the same with the content they have in other languages (including Portuguese). The question is if they are going to use users' content in their future print editions (if they're going to exist). I think it can be a great business model to keep their content updated, but let's see if users will agree on helping for free in improving a content that can be sold in other formats in the future.

Parece que a francesa Larousse vai tentar competir com a Wikipedia. Eles deram livre acesso ao seu conteúdo enciclopédico e os usuários ainda podem contribuir. Mas ao contrário da Wikipedia, apenas usuários identificados podem contribuir. Boas notícias para os falantes do francês e eu espero que a editora decida fazer o mesmo com os conteúdos que possui em outras línguas (incluindo o Português). A questão agora é se eles vão usar o conteúdo dos usuários em suas futuras edições impressas (se elas ainda foram existir). Pode ser um bom modelo de negócio para manter o conteúdo atualizado, mas resta saber se os usuários vão concordar em ajudar a melhorar um conteúdo que poderá ser vendido em outros formatos no futuro.

Internet should help us getting in touch with other literatures, but we know it's not always like this. Anyway, exceptions are growing:

- This month issue from the Words Without Borders brings Modern Chinese Literature translated into English (and some Spanish and Romanian as well).

- The American Small Beer Press is publishing a collection of short stories by John Kessel for free download, under creative commons. You can do with it almost whathever you want, including reading. (Source: Boing Boing)

And for read all this PDFs you can use Skim (if you're a Mac user). I've already read some books with it. Yes, I bring my laptop to bed to read before going to sleep...

Through the The Bonefolder website (see the previous post) I run to this acronym, LOCKSS, which stands for Lots Of Copies Keep Stuff Safe. Cool name, isn't it? And it "is an international non-profit community initiative that provides tools and support so libraries can easily and cost-effectively preserve today’s web-published materials for tomorrow’s readers".

Then the future was the Internet, but Internet is already there for 10 years and the book keep going. How the next future of the book will look like? Maybe, the future of the book is the book itself.

Fine, great. But first impression: it would work for other languages or everybody is obligated to read English? People like to use examples from the Music Industry but they forget one thing: You don't have to understand a language to be able to listen/consume the music (of course some people end liking songs with very stupid lyrics...). To read/consume books, on the other hand, you need the language, it not so simple. That's way publishing is never going to become completely international (with the exception of English, maybe). To conquer other markets you need a translation, thus a new product.

A maioria das pessas que trabalham com livros ainda são um tanto conservadoras e tendem a não gostar de tecnologia. Afinal, os livros funcionam bem há tanto tempo, porque mudar? Ou, a Internet (o cinema, o rádio, a televisão...) vai substituir o livro: eles são maus, maus, maus... Mas é impossível parar o tempo ou as pessoas, as coisas vão mudar querendo ou não e talvez agora o "povo do livro" está percebendo que as coisas vão co-existir e se misturar. Paulo Coelho está dando os livros dele de graça na Internet e a Penguin fez um site só para "degustação de livros" (coisa que no Brasil já é coisa comum há alguns anos, não?). O negócio agora é experimentar antes de comprar. E parece que a China está anos luz à nossa frente, espero achar links sobre isso logo.

I would say that most of the people who works with books still are kind of conservative and tend to dislike technology. Books after all are doing find for so long, why change anything? Or, worse, Internet (as it happened with cinema, radio, television...) is going to replace the book: bad, bad, bad boys, let's try to keep it the way it always was. But it's impossible to constrain the changes and maybe now people are realizing that everything is going to exist together and mixed. Paulo Coelho is already given the PDFs of his books for free and now Penguin is giving "tasters" for free (but I have to say that it's not new, some Brazilian Publishers and Bookshops have already been doing that for 4 ou 5 years). So, experience it before you buy it! And it seems that China is so, so ahead us in that matter, I hope to find links about that soon.

O último dia 21 de fevereiro foi o Dia Internacional da Língua Materna. Além disso, nesse mesmo dia começou o Ano Internacional das Línguas, proclamado pela Unesco. Vários projetos e eventos sobre o assunto acontecerão pelo mundo, incluindo projetos relacionados à tradução. Vale a pena dar uma olhadinha no site da Unesco para saber mais detalhes.

On 21t February was the Mother Language International Day. In addition to that, in this very day the International Year of Languages started, proclaimed by Unesco. Na esteira do plágio de traduções antigas que provocou protestos da intelectualidade brasileira, tornou-se mais evidente um hábito da nossa imprensa que facilita a repetição de tais abusos. Refiro-me à constante omissão do nome do tradutor na citação de obras traduzidas que são objeto de notícias, entrevistas e resenhas.

O Prosa & Verso de 29 de dezembro de 2007, em uma matéria de página inteira sobre o escritor Nathan Englander, reproduz um trecho da tradução de sua obra, lançada nos últimos dias de dezembro pela Editora Rocco, no qual omite o crédito devido ao tradutor.

Por sua vez , O Estado de S. Paulo inicia sua matéria, também de página inteira, afirmando: "Logo que seu livro de contos Para alívio dos impulsos insuportáveis foi publicado, em 2000, o americano Nathan Englander impressionou a crítica especializada." Ora, o livro não foi publicado no Brasil no ano 2000, mas em 2007, e Nathan Englander jamais escreveu um livro em português.

Benefício para todos

O livro lançado no Brasil foi escrito por um segundo autor, o seu tradutor, cuja tarefa é exatamente essa: construir pontes entre culturas, tornar acessíveis ao leitor brasileiro obras escritas em línguas estrangeiras.

Quando um tradutor ou um grupo de tradutores reclama do desrespeito à lei dos Direitos Autorais e às normas da Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas, o editor responde que a citação iria contrariar a diretriz do jornal. Como pode a diretriz de um jornal se sobrepor à Lei Federal no 9.610, de 19 de novembro de 1998, que determina em seu Título III, Capítulo II, Art. 24 que é direito moral do tradutor (I) o de reivindicar, a qualquer tempo, a autoria da obra; (II) o de ter seu nome, pseudônimo ou sinal convencional indicado ou anunciado, como sendo o autor, na utilização da sua obra?

Acatar a lei, portanto, beneficia o leitor, respeita a lei, protege o tradutor e o editor e impede novas investidas contra o patrimônio cultural do país.

Nas leituras que estou começando a fazer para a minha tese, conheci Rainer Ganahl, um artista austríaco radicado em NY. O trabalho dele sobre política e linguagem é muito bacana. Alguns dos projetos deles envolvem o aprendizado de uma língua, o registro do processo e uma instalação no final. Parece que ele já sabe 11 línguas (quisera eu ter tido essa idéia primeiro!). Os trabalhos dele com linguagem já tem um tempo, então isso pode ser notícia velha para alguns... Mas para mim, é novidade! ;-) Na foto ao lado, camisetas do artista com a frase "Por favor, me ensine (uma língua).", escritas na língua em questão.

In the readings that I'm starting to do for my thesis now, I get to know Rainer Ganahl, this Austrian artist who lives in NY. His work about language and politics it's very interesting. Some of his projects were about the process of learning a language. It seems that by now he knows 11 of them (I wish I have had this idea first!). His works about language are kind of old, so it can be old news for some people... But for me, it's new! ;-) In the picture, t-shirts by the artist with the phrase "Please, teach me (a language).", written in that language.

I'm reading Books in the digital age, by John Thompson, for my studies and his description of the decision process about publishing book sounded sooo familiar to that I couldn't help putting it here:

“At the point when an editor or editorial committee is considering whether to take on a book, there may be a great deal of discussion, speculation and even agonized deliberation about sales prospects, but by the time the book is actually published and its sales figures are clear, the earlier discussion may be largely forgotten and the book takes on a life of its own.”

Já que não estou no Brasil para poder participar do lançamento, participo assim de longe mesmo. Hoje entrou no ar o site O Brasil de Aloysio Biondi, que dá livre acesso aos textos do jornalista sob a licença Criative Commons, quer dizer, vc pode reproduzir à vontade desde que cite a fonte. Uma iniciativa admirável que deve servir de exemplo para as famílias de outros jornalistas, escritores e etc. Uma herança como essa é para ser divulgada, dividida, e não escondida (e só liberada em troca de muita grana) como fazem muitas famílias, que assim acabam enterrando não só a memória da figura em questão mas levam junto uma parte da memória do nosso país.

Eu sou super fã do Alberto Manguel, já li muita coisa que ele escreveu e adoro. Agora também estou escutando-o nessas aulas online. Ele tem uma fala pausada típica de professor e ótima para os não nativos do inlglês (como ele mesmo). Só estou começando (cada aula tem mais de uma hora), mas já recomendo! ;-)

I'm a big fan of Alberto Manguel, I've already read a lot of stuff by him and I love it. No I can listen to him as well in this online lectures. He has a very calm speech as any good professor and it's great for non-native english speakers. I'm just starting, but I can already recommend it! ;-)

Essas simpáticas (ou assustadoras?) cadeirinhas ambulantes estão em uso na Openbare Bibliotheek Eindhoven (Biblioteca Pública de Eindhoven). Quando vi pensei duas coisas:
1. Gente, não é mais fácil fazer um banco leve que dê para levar para cá e para lá?
2. A vingança das cadeiras: na hora que vc vai sentar, ela sai correndo...

Those cute (and frightening?) little chairs are in use at the Openbare Bibliotheek Eindhoven (Eindhoven Public Library). When I saw it, two things came into my mind:
1. A mundane light chair is not much easier and inexpensive?
2. The chairs' revolution: when you try to seat, they just run away!

Digitalização e arquivos digitais (em Bibliotecas e em editoras) são assunto diário no meu curso aqui e por conta disso estou indo atrás de projetos no Brasil nessa área. A Biblioteca Nacional tem alguns projetos interessantes, como a Biblioteca Nacional sem Fronteiras, todos sob o guarda-chuva da Biblioteca Nacional Digital. O triste é que são sites chatinhos de navegar, os sites não conversam entre si e cada um trabalha de maneiras diferentes. A única coisa que têm em comum é o fato de que o usuário é obrigado a instalar "readers" na própria máquina para poder visualizar os arquivos, que também tem que ser baixados... Detalhe: cada projeto exige um "reader" diferente. Pelo menos os programas (que eu baixei) são apresentados em versões para Mac e até Linux. Pena que esses sites não são mais divulgados, mas mesmo se fossem acho que as pessoas desistiriam rapidinho de usá-los... Uma pena.

É triste mas certas coisas no Brasil, principalmente as que dependem de verba e boa vontade pública, andam a passo de tartaruga. Tomemos como exemplo o movimento de digitalização da Biblioteca Nacional.... Mas fiquei feliz ao saber da existênca da Biblioteca Nacional Digital (portuguesa, com certesa). Tá vendo essa imagem aí em cima, pois bem, é de um manuscrito do Fernando Pessoa.

Lú made a post about this book probably because she liked the content. It's interesting indeed. But what called my attention is that a so well designed website was created to sell a book. A reagular reader wouldn't pay any attention to the fact that the book is published by a big Publishing House. And I'm just wondering if this is was an idea from the author, from the market department or from the publisher???

A Lú fez um post sobre esse livro provavelmente ela gostou do conteúdo. É realmente interessante. Mas o que me chamou a atenção foi o fato de criarem um site bem feito para vender um livro. Um leitor comum não vai prestar a menor atenção se o livro é publicado por uma grande editora. E fico pensando se isso foi idéia do autor, do departamento de marketing ou do editor???

Today I visited a very interesting library called Biblioteca Thysiana, it's from the XVII century but remains exactly as it was. Unfortunatelly, there is no website, I didn't take pictures and I didn't found much online information... Still in the Libraries subject, Rachel posted about that she really has to visit a library in Washington (where she lived for many years). I have to admit that I lived in Rio de Janeiro for two years and I have never visited the Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (picture above). I really have to do it next time.

Hoje eu visitei uma biblioteca muito interessante chama Biblioteca Thysiana, ela é do século XVII e permanece intacta, como era. Infelizmente ela não tem site, eu não tirei fotos e não achei muita informação online... Ainda no assunto biblioteca, a Rachel falou que ela precisa visitar uma biblioteca em Washington (onde morou por muitos anos). Eu tenho que admitir que morei no Rio de Janeiro por dois anos e nunca visitei o Real Gabinete Português de Leitura (foto acima). Eu preciso fazer isso da próxima vez, sem dúvida!

Depois de muitos anos de briga na justiça, finalmente a obra de Monteiro Lobato volta a ser publicada, agora pela Editora Globo. Eu entendo que a família quisesse que a obra fosse preservada e publicada da melhor maneira possível, mas nunca entendi porque eles foram tão chatos, principalmente com a questão as ilustrações. Querer dizer como a Emília ou a Narizinho se parecem não faz muito sentido, isso está na cabeça do leitor. Mas para mim, a Narizinho sempre será essa (que não é a da primeira edição):

Outra coisa que me chocou tremendamente foi saber que eles vão "atualizar" conteúdos da obra. Ora essa, a onda politicamente correta está indo longe demais. Se a geografia ou a gramática que ele ensina nos seus livros não é a mais a correta, ainda assim são reflexo de seu tempo e podem ser usadas para estudo comparativo. O que me deixa mais tranqüila, é que em 2018 os livros caem em domínio público. Hoje em dia 10 anos é pouco tempo. Espero que quando esse dia chegar, algum editor de bom senso publique os livros como são e com ilustrações de mais bom gosto (ou até as antigas???) para que os filhos que eu por ventura venha a ter possam lê-los fidedignamente.

Diga rápido o título do seu livro preferido. Agora, rápido, o nome da editora que o publicou... É interessante ver alguém do mercado editorial falar sobre isso. No Brasil, tratar disso dentro de uma editora é quase um tabu... Acham que o leitor se importa com a editora do livro que compra. Que nada, tirando algumas exceções como Companhia das Letras e a Cosac Naif, ninguém liga para editora. E quando se fala em cuidar da "marca" ou da linha da editora, o pessoal fica com o cabelo em pé, pra quê???

Quick, name your favorite book. Now, quick, name who published it. It's interesting to read someone from the editorial market talking about it. In Brazil, it's almost a tabu in the publishing houses... People think that the reader cares about the Publishing House of the books they buy. Aside some exceptions, nobody cares. E when someone talks about taking care of the "brand" or the editorial line, everybody gets shocked, what for???

Eu confesso que eu cultivo o estranho hábito de cheirar livros. Não todos e nem em qualquer lugar, mas alguns cheiram tão bem! E quando saem quentinhos da gráfica? Mas essa eu achei demais: um site americano de livros eletrônicos está dando aos seus leitores adesivos com "cheiro de livro" para colar na tela do computador depois de uma pequisa apontar que esse poderia ser um dos motivos pelos quais as pessoas não trocam o livro de papel pelo livro eletrônico...

I confess that I have the odd habit of smelling books. Some of them smell so good! But I think this is too much: an American site that sells e-books is giving an stick that "smells like books" to its costumers. It seems that an survey pointed this as one of the reasons for people not shifting from paper books to e-papers...

Eu já falei aqui sobre o livro O Professor e o Demente. O mesmo autor, Simon Winchester, escreveu um outro livro sobre a extraordinária história desse dicinário da língua inglesa, que levou 71 anos para ser publicado inteiramente, The Meaning of Everything. Eu recomendo a leitura dos dois, mesmo que só tenha lido o primeiro. O outro, já está na minha lista! Se você acha que ler um livro sobre um dicionário deve ser a coisa mais chata do mundo, ouça esse podcast (em inglês) em que o próprio autor conta um pouco dessa história... Dei várias risadas no trem voltando pra casa hoje.

I've already mentioned here the book The Professor and the Madman. The same author, Simon Winchester, wrote another book about the extraordinary history of this English dictionary, which took 71 years to be completely published, The Meaning of Everything. I recommend both, even if I have read only one. The second is already in my list! If you think that reading a book about a dictionary can be the most boring thing in the world, you should listen to this podcast in which the author himself tells a little bit of this history... I laughed a lot in the train coming back home today.
